🌠 Night Sky—Meteor Shower

The Quadrantid meteor shower, one of the most spectacular meteor displays of the year, peaks annually in early January and is best observed in the Northern Hemisphere. In Des Moines, this celestial show will reach its peak on the night of January 3. Stargazers can expect to see up to 120 meteors per hour under optimal conditions, though local light pollution and weather may affect visibility. The meteors originate from the asteroid 2003 EH1 and are known for their bright, often blue-hued trails that streak across the sky.

For the best view in Des Moines, head to a location away from city lights, such as Jester Park or Chichaqua Bottoms Greenbelt. Bundle up, as it’s going to be brisk, and allow your eyes at least 20 minutes to adjust to the darkness. Bring a reclining chair or blanket to comfortably enjoy the show, as meteors can appear in any part of the sky. This year, a waning gibbous moon may slightly dim the fainter meteors, but the Quadrantids’ bright streaks should still offer an unforgettable sight for astronomy enthusiasts and casual observers alike.

THE ROUNDUP 🧵📱

🚿 Central Iowa Water Works Goes Operational

As of yesterday, January 1, Central Iowa Water Works (CIWW) began operations, marking a new chapter in water utility services for the region. This transition consolidates water services for more than 500,000 people across Des Moines and surrounding communities, replacing the previous Des Moines Water Works as the primary water provider. Central Iowa Water Works aims to provide reliable and high-quality water while focusing on sustainability and the efficient management of resources. The transition is expected to improve service delivery, enhance infrastructure, and support growth in the region, addressing the increasing demand for water in a rapidly expanding area.

🥘 Meals from the Heartland: A Local Mission with a Global Impact

Meals from the Heartland is a Des Moines-based nonprofit dedicated to combating hunger locally and globally. Founded in 2008, the organization began as a community effort, bringing together volunteers to package nutrient-rich meals for those in need. Its mission quickly gained momentum, and today, it operates out of its permanent packaging center in West Des Moines, partnering with schools, businesses, churches, and civic groups to address food insecurity. Meals from the Heartland has distributed millions of meals to individuals and families in Iowa, across the United States, and around the world, becoming a cornerstone of generosity in the Des Moines area.

Ways to Support: Join the MLK Day Packaging Event

There are many ways to contribute to Meals from the Heartland’s mission, from volunteering at a packaging event to donating funds or supplies. One of the organization's standout opportunities is the annual MLK Day packaging event, a day of service honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy. Held on January 15 this year, volunteers of all ages are invited to participate in assembling meals that will be sent to communities in need. Additionally, you can organize a group to sponsor a meal packaging event or make a direct donation to support the cost of ingredients and distribution. Whether you have an hour to spare or want to make a long-term commitment, Meals from the Heartland offers countless ways to make a meaningful difference.
