Autumn Vibes: Fall Primer is Here.

9/12

In partnership with

Good morning, Des Moines! 🌅 This is DSM at Dawn. It’s almost fall in Iowa, which means you leave the house in a sweater, regret it by noon, and need a parka by sunset.

In todays issue:

  • 🍂 Fall Primer

  • Local Bake Shop 🍩

  • 🏈 Bulldogs Big Win

And we’re off.

Fall Primer 🍁

Fall in Des Moines is a time of vibrant transformation, where the city is blanketed in rich shades of red, orange, and gold. The crisp air invites locals to explore the many parks and trails, such as Gray’s Lake or the Des Moines Riverwalk, offering picturesque views of the changing foliage. Pumpkin patches and apple orchards around the metro area buzz with families enjoying hayrides, cider, and seasonal treats. The city’s fall festivals, like the World Food & Music Festival or the Iowa Latino Heritage Festival, bring the community together to celebrate local culture, food, and music, making autumn in Des Moines feel warm and welcoming despite the cooler weather.

While its not quite technically Fall yet, with Labor Day in our rearview mirror, I thought it was time to highlight some things that will be going on the next couple months around our wonderful city. Catch Des Moines has put together a great list of different ways to experience the fall colors around town.

The fun kicks off this weekend with the Great Iowa Fall Ride and the 10th annual Oktoberfest out at Adventureland. Don’t worry, if you miss this one, you will have more chances to celebrate with your favorite Bavarian Beers later this month.

Last, but certainly not least, I know everyone loves to check out the local pumpkin patches and orchards. Who’s going to visit them all?

THE ROUNDUP🧵📱

Iowa Latino Restaurant Week

A new annual tradition starts this week. Iowa Latino Restaurant Week is an 11 day event being put on by the Iowa Latino Hospitality Council. 20+ local eateries will participate in the inaugural event, including cuisines from Mexico, Central America, and South America.

According to the Iowa Restaurant Association, 10% of Iowa restaurants are now Latino owned, with that percentage being higher in Des Moines. It wasn’t always that way, and the Association is using funding from a National Restaurant Association program to elevate specific industry segments. Iowa will be one of the first states to use the program to a establish a Latino-specific group.

You can find a full list of participation restaurants here. Each will have special menus offering 2 lunches for $25 or 2 dinners for $50.

Around Town 🏙️📈

In this section, I am going to highlight a local business or restaurant. This week, we’ll start with a place I tried for the first time recently.

On the Rise Bake Shop 🥐

If you’re anything like me, then you’re a sucker for some fresh baked goods. On the Rise is a locally (Bondurant) owned bakery. Everything on the menu is made by hand by owner Kurt Witte. You can find him and his wife Hannah at Somewhere In The Middle Coffee Shop in Bondurant each Saturday morning as well as the Bondurant Farmer’s Market on Wednesday evenings through October. They will also be doing holiday pickup orders.

I stopped out last Saturday morning and I was able to snag some donut holes and a danish. You can expect donuts and pastries on Saturdays, with the Wednesday menu consisting of bagels, cookies, pumpkin bars, and much more. Be sure to get there early and grab yours before they are gone!

This cannabis startup pioneered “rapid onset” gummies

Most people prefer to smoke cannabis but that isn’t an option if you’re at work or in public.

That’s why we were so excited when we found out about Mood’s new Rapid Onset THC Gummies. They can take effect in as little as 5 minutes without the need for a lighter, lingering smells or any coughing.

Nobody will ever know you’re enjoying some THC.

We recommend you try them out because they offer a 100% money-back guarantee. And for a limited time, you can receive 20% off with code FIRST20.
