LABOR DAY WEEKEND 🌭🚗

Labor Day, celebrated on the first Monday of September, is a national holiday in the United States dedicated to honoring the contributions of American workers and the labor movement. The holiday originated in the late 19th century during the height of the Industrial Revolution when workers faced harsh conditions, long hours, and inadequate wages. As labor unions grew in strength and influence, they began organizing strikes and rallies to demand better working conditions, fair pay, and reasonable hours. The first Labor Day parade was held on September 5, 1882, in New York City, organized by the Central Labor Union, marking a significant moment in the fight for workers' rights.

In 1894, following the Pullman Strike—a nationwide railroad strike that led to widespread unrest—President Grover Cleveland officially declared Labor Day a federal holiday as a conciliatory gesture towards American workers. Since then, Labor Day has evolved from its roots as a day of labor activism into a broader celebration of the end of summer, marked by parades, barbecues, and family gatherings. However, its origins as a day to honor the sacrifices and achievements of the American labor movement remain an important part of its legacy, reminding the nation of the ongoing importance of workers' rights and fair labor practices.

But Nick, what does that have to do with DSM?

Well, you will find all sorts of events below that are happening this weekend. From football to rodeos, there is something for everyone. Get out and enjoy some beautiful weather and celebrate the unofficial end of summer. DSM 4 Kids has put together lists of fun outdoor activities that are still going on this weekend.

THE ROUNDUP 🧵📱

Bucs New Home 🧊

The Des Moines Buccaneers, a member of the United States Hockey League, recently ended their plans to build a new ice arena at Merle Hay Mall. This decision, along with a mechanical issue that has caused delays making ice, has led them to relocate their 2024-25 home games to the MidAmerican Energy Company RecPlex in West Des Moines. The original plan to construct the arena at the mall was part of a larger effort to revitalize the area, but despite the Buccaneers pulling out, Merle Hay Mall officials have stated that they will continue with the redevelopment project.

The relocation to the MidAmerican RecPlex is seen as a temporary solution while the team seeks a more permanent home. The move has raised concerns among local businesses at Merle Hay Mall, which had hoped the arena would boost foot traffic and contribute to the mall's resurgence. The Buccaneers' decision marks a significant shift in the mall's redevelopment strategy, leaving uncertainty about the future of the proposed arena.

The Bucs first game is September 28th, with the home opener on October 4th.

Topgolf 🏌️

Topgolf, a popular entertainment venue known for its high-tech driving ranges and social atmosphere, is set to open its first location in Iowa, specifically in West Des Moines on September 6th. This venue will offer an interactive golfing experience with 72 indoor-outdoor climate controlled hitting bays, where players of all skill levels can enjoy hitting microchipped golf balls at targets, scoring points based on accuracy and distance. Beyond the golf experience, Topgolf is also known for its vibrant social scene, complete with a full-service restaurant, bar, and various entertainment options, making it a destination for both serious golfers and those just looking for a fun night out.

The arrival of Topgolf in West Des Moines is a significant addition to the local entertainment landscape, promising to draw both residents and visitors to the area. It joins Putts and Pins, an interactive mini-golf restaurant, as golf and dining venues in the Jordan Creek area. As part of its expansion into smaller markets like Des Moines, Topgolf's presence is likely to become a popular spot for community gatherings, corporate events, and casual outings, offering a unique blend of sports and entertainment that appeals to a wide audience.

These cannabis gummies keep selling out in 2023

If you've ever struggled to enjoy cannabis due to the harshness of smoking or vaping, you're not alone. That’s why these new cannabis gummies caught our eye.

Mood is an online dispensary that has invented a “joint within a gummy” that’s extremely potent yet federally-legal. Their gummies are formulated to tap into the human body’s endocannabinoid system.

Although this system was discovered in the 1990’s, farmers and scientists at Mood were among the first to figure out how to tap into it with cannabis gummies. Just 1 of their rapid onset THC gummies can get you feeling right within 5 minutes!
