Principal Changes 👩‍💼 

Principal Financial Group has announced a successor for outgoing CEO Dan Houston, who has led the company since 2015. He has overseen a period of substantial growth, with market capitalization increasing from $13 billion to over $20 billion. Houston is credited with steering the company through strategic advancements and fostering a culture focused on innovation and client service. His leadership positioned Principal as a leading global financial services provider. Houston will continue to serve as executive chair of the Principal board of directors.

Deanna Strable, a central Iowa native and graduate of Dowling Catholic High School, will take over for Houston in January 2025, becoming the first woman to hold the role. Strable, who has been the President and COO since August, has extensive experience working in Principal’s benefits and insurance divisions, along with many years as CFO, all of which has equipped her with a deep understanding of the company’s operations. She aims to build on Houston’s foundation, prioritizing growth and inclusivity in the company’s future.

Merle Hay Hockey Arena 🏒 🏟️ 

Merle Hay Mall is advancing its plan to add a new arena to the mall's space, aiming to revitalize the area and attract more visitors. This project, which originally included the Des Moines Buccaneers, will transform portions of the mall and includes a multi-use facility designed to host hockey, volleyball, concerts, and community gatherings. The development seeks to make Merle Hay a premier destination and boost local economic activity through increased foot traffic and event hosting.

Christkindlmarket Volunteers ⛄️ 

The Iowa European Cultural Connection (IECC) is seeking volunteers for its exciting cultural events lineup in the heart of Des Moines. The Christkindlmarket is held annually in early December. It is designed to replicate the traditional Christkindlmarkt of Germany, a custom dating back to the 16th century. There are several volunteer options to choose from, which you can check out here. This is a fantastic opportunity for anyone passionate about global culture and community engagement.

Shane Gillis 📣 🧑‍🦱 

On Tuesday it was announced that comedian Shane Gillis would be bringing his stand-up comedy tour to Des Moines, offering fans a chance to experience his sharp, humorous insights live. Known for his brief tenure on Saturday Night Live and his edgy comedic style, Gillis has quickly built a strong following. His shows often feature observational humor mixed with personal anecdotes, showcasing his unique perspective on everyday topics. Des Moines comedy enthusiasts can expect an engaging night full of laughter and wit. Tickets go on sale tomorrow.

LOVE FOR DSM 🏙️📈

We’ve seen studies like this before, but sometimes we just need some reminding. This time, the website RentCafe has rated Des Moines the 3rd most livable metro in the United States, behind only Portland, ME and Lincoln, NE. You can check out the criteria in the link.

The site calls Des Moines an Iowa gem that embodies the idea of a thriving community. Des Moines, Iowa, has been recognized as one of the most livable metro areas in the United States, thanks to its low cost of living, strong community spirit, and accessible amenities. According to the report, the city boasts an affordable housing market, making it an attractive option for residents seeking a high quality of life without the expense typical of larger metros. Dome for the Holidays

The Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden is starting a new family holiday tradition this Saturday. Stroll through the tropical oasis we all know and love while enjoying thousands of twinkling lights, a collection of blown glass sculptures, festive music, refreshments, and much more.

Sip n’ Shop

Look Local First has teamed up with the Des Moines Heritage Center to bring you this pre Black Friday event. 30+ local small businesses will be on hand to jumpstart your holiday shopping. Be among the first 100 attendees this Saturday for an exclusive swag bag.

Turkey Trails

This fun, Thanksgiving-themed 5k/10 takes place at Grays Lake on Sunday. The race will start at 9 am with an after party to follow. They are still accepting volunteers as well.

Santa N Paws 2024

Every family needs a photo with their pets to celebrate the 2024 holiday season. Pets are not required for this event but all are welcome. Come out to the Animal Rescue League where walk ins are welcome, but its recommend to book online here.
