RAGBRAI 🚲️
This year, the Register's Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa (RAGBRAI) brought an extra layer of resilience and community spirit as it passed through Greenfield, a town recently impacted by severe tornado damage. Despite the challenges, the residents of Greenfield showcased their unwavering strength and hospitality, welcoming thousands of cyclists with open arms.
As riders pedaled through the town, they witnessed both the devastation left by the tornado and the incredible recovery efforts underway. Local businesses, many of which had just begun to rebuild, offered refreshments and a warm respite for the cyclists. Volunteers and community members rallied together to ensure the event was as smooth and enjoyable as possible, providing support and encouragement to participants.
RAGBRAI's stop in Greenfield not only highlighted the town's determination to rebuild but also brought much-needed economic activity and a sense of normalcy. The event served as a testament to the power of community and the indomitable spirit of the people of Greenfield, demonstrating that even in the face of adversity, Iowa’s heart beats strong.
THE ROUNDUP 💻💡
National Balloon Classic
Every summer, the skies over Indianola, Iowa, come alive with a breathtaking display of color and wonder during the National Balloon Classic. This annual event, a beloved tradition since 1989, attracts balloonists and spectators from all over the country for nine days of airborne adventure and community celebration.
Starting this Friday, the National Balloon Classic features over 100 hot air balloons, each one a unique work of art. The spectacle begins each day with dawn patrol flights, where early risers can watch balloons lift off at sunrise, creating a serene and magical start to the day. Evening flights offer a different kind of beauty as balloons drift gracefully against the backdrop of the setting sun.
Beyond the awe-inspiring balloon ascensions, the event is packed with activities for all ages. Live music performances set the stage for festive evenings, while the Balloon Field hosts a variety of vendors offering delicious food, refreshing beverages, and unique crafts. The crowd favorite, Night Glow, illuminates the grounds as the balloons are inflated, but stay tethered to the ground. It’s a spectacular display as the balloons glow like huge light bulbs or Chinese lanterns.
For those looking to get closer to the action, tethered balloon rides provide a thrilling opportunity to experience the sensation of flight without leaving the festival grounds. Balloon competitions add an element of excitement as pilots showcase their skills in target drops and other challenges, vying for top honors.
The National Balloon Classic is more than just a festival; it's a celebration of community, creativity, and the timeless allure of hot air ballooning. Whether you're a long-time attendee or a first-time visitor, this event promises unforgettable memories and a chance to see the world from a new perspective.
